Inside Angel Anosike’s AMVCA debut look in Yemi Shoyemi

We got ready with Angel Anosike for her AMVCA debut. It was storytelling brought to life through intentional craftsmanship, natural beauty, and a powerful collaboration that honoured her essence as an actor and creative.

The Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) always brings glamour, creativity, and style to the spotlight. This year, we got a front-row seat as rising star Angel Anosike made her first appearance at the event. Her film Christmas in Lagos—also her first movie role—earned six nominations, making this more than  just a red carpet moment and a major milestone in her career.

A collaboration with fashion designer Yemi Shoyemi, Angel Anosike’s AMVCA debut look captures the essence of soft elegance and personal style. Yemi explains that the inspiration for the look came from Angel herself. Her personality, confidence, and graceful carriage informed the foundation of the outfit. “I wanted to design something that felt bold yet feminine, structured but fluid, and truly reflective of her energy,” Yemi said.  The look balances strength and softness, with modern lines and a touch of drama.

Let’s get inside this look and Angel’s journey to the 2025 11th AMVCAs.

For her first AMVCA, Angel was understandably a bundle of excitement and nerves. “It’s a lot of people and interactions, so I’m anxious but also really excited,” she shared. With Christmas in Lagos scoring six nominations, including Best Movie, it was a big night for her and the entire production team.

Angel floated onto the red carpet in a custom Yemi Shoyemi creation—a structured, goddess-inspired two-piece set with clean lines, bronze tones, and hand-beaded details that shimmered with every step. “I really want people to notice the lines—each one thoughtfully created using a mix of fabrication and beading to sculpt the silhouette,” Yemi Shoyemi said. The skirt, cut on the bias, flowed beautifully toward the hem. “It’s intentional; it moves like light—almost like a reflection of the sun,” the designer explained.

Angel shared how her on-screen character, Yagazie, influenced her fashion choices for the night. “She was eccentric and expressive, and playing her helped me appreciate my natural hair even more,” Angel said. The look was paired with her crown of natural hair styled in a sleek bun and golden-hued spiral detail. It was beautifully detailed by Bernard Smiles—the same stylist who created Yagazie’s signature hairstyles on set.

Why Yemi Shoyemi was her designer of choice

The choice to work with Yemi Shoyemi for Angel Anosike’s AMVCA debut look was intentional. As her debut, working  with the right designer and team was crucial. “A lot of designers reached out, but I was drawn to Yemi’s craftsmanship,” Angel explained. “I saw one of her bridal designs and appreciated the attention to detail.”

For Yemi Shoyemi, this collaboration was equally meaningful. “I was already familiar with Angel from Christmas in Lagos, and when my team mentioned her, it felt like the perfect fit,” she said. “We connected; the energy was right, and everything just flowed naturally.”

For Angel, if her look could speak, the message was clear: “You can be simple and elegant, soft and beautiful, just by being yourself.”

That sentiment was evident in her glam choices—a soft makeup look that suits her soft girl persona. She shares a strong  synergy with her makeup artist, Beauty by Tejj, who consistently gets her makeup right. “I love makeup that feels like skin. I don’t want to be hidden—I just want to enhance what’s already there,” she added. Using Maybelline products, Beauty by Tejj delivered a look that shone and glowed.

Angel Anosike’s AMVCA debut look was a celebration of authenticity and comfort. With fashion, she has learned through her journey as a creative that comfort will always be a priority. “I don’t like to feel stifled,” she added.

For the designer, she wanted to tell a captivating story of the power of simplicity meeting intention. “There’s an elegance about how the look frames her, but there’s also a daring edge that makes you stop and take it all in,” Yemi shared. Ultimately, she wanted people to see Angel fully owning the moment in a confident, unapologetic, and unforgettable manner.

A seamless collaboration from first fitting to the final look

Yemi and Angel base their collaboration on mutual respect and creativity. “The first fitting felt like an instant yes,” Angel shared. “We made some tweaks, but it already felt like me.” The fine details and modern structure made Angel Anosike’s AMVCA debut look so striking. “It’s bold yet soft, structured but fluid,” Yemi added. “It captures her energy.”

For the designer, it was also a seamless and fulfilling collaboration. “Angel knows who she is and what she wants, but she’s also incredibly open and trusting of the creative process.” A truly collaborative experience. It was fluid, intentional, and never felt forced for either of them.
